Help researchers better understand flu and improve health outcomes for future generations.
The WellKiwis study is a long-term research project following around 3,000 people across the Wellington region, including infants, adults and households, for up to seven years. By learning how flu spreads and how our immune systems respond to infection and vaccination, the study aims to support the development of better, longer-lasting flu vaccines and help New Zealand prepare for future pandemics.
Taking part in the study is simple. Participants provide a small number of blood samples throughout the year and complete a short weekly online survey during flu season to record any symptoms. If someone develops symptoms that may be caused by a respiratory virus, they may be asked to provide a nasal swab for testing. For households where someone tests positive for flu, we also monitor other household members every few days to better understand how the virus spreads at home.
Samples help researchers understand immunity by looking at antibodies, immune cells and genes involved in immune responses. Swabs are tested for flu and a range of other common respiratory viruses.
